Trujillo Taken to Hospital After Spill on Sunday

Jockey Elvis Trujillo was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Fla. after falling from his mount in the eighth race at Calder on Sunday, Nov. 25. Paramedics said there were no apparent injuries, but the 24-year-old rider was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Trujillo, currently the second leading rider of the Tropical Meet and champion of this year’s Calder Meet, was riding 2-year-old filly Heavenly Beauty when she suffered a catastrophic injury to her left front cannon bone.

Moments earlier in the race, in an unrelated incident, jockey Rosemary Homeister, Jr. was unseated from 2-year-old filly Full Exchange as she was trying to pull her up in the race. According to track veterinarian Dr. Mary Scollay, the filly fractured a knee, which is likely to be career ending, but should not be life-threatening. Homeister was unharmed.

An update on jockey Laurie Gulas, who was thrown from her horse in the fifth race at Calder on Saturday, was made available on Sunday. The 38-year-old suffered some broken ribs and contusions to her chest wall, and is in discomfort, but is otherwise in good spirits. She expects to be on the sidelines for at least a couple of weeks.
