AAEP Foundation & ALSIC Award Veterinary Scholarships

AAEP Foundation & ALSIC Award Veterinary Scholarships

Eight veterinary students were recently selected to receive $2,500 scholarships from the American Live Stock Insurance Company (ALSIC) and the AAEP Foundation. The scholarships are presented annually to fourth-year veterinary students who plan to pursue a career in equine veterinary practice.

The scholarship recipients are Jeremiah Easley, Virginia-Maryland Regional College; Johanna Elfenbein,  University of Florida; Melissa Fagerlin, Auburn University; Elizabeth Fortier, Tufts University; Thera L. Fox, University of Saskatchewan (WCVM); Lauren Javernick, Colorado State University; Katie Seabaugh, Washington State University; and Jennifer Selvig, University of Minnesota.

Veterinary students are nominated for the scholarships by their individual schools with supporting references from AAEP members and clinical instructors. In addition to academic excellence, recipients are evaluated on leadership ability and involvement in activities that benefit the health and welfare of the horse.

Based in Genevea, Ill., ALSIC is a licensed insurance carrier in all 50 states and is primarily involved in livestock mortality. Coverage is also provided in other parts of the world with special emphasis on Australia and South Africa. ALSIC is the proud recipient of the A+ (Superior) rating from the independent analyst, A.M. Best & Company.

Established in 1994, the non-profit AAEP Foundation complements the mission of the AAEP through its support of research, education, benevolence and the equine community. In 2006, more than $320,000 was raised by the Foundation to support funding for educational summits, scholarships and emergency needs, as well as other endeavors.
