RSPCA To Honor World Horse Welfare Field Officer

RSPCA To Honor World Horse Welfare Field Officer

For the second year in a row, the RSPCA is recognizing the work of a World Horse Welfare Field Officer with a special award.

Chris Williamsom, Field Officer for the North-West will be presented with a letter of commendation in recognition of his work alongside the Society at a special event on 23rd June. This comes a year after Ted Barnes, Field Officer for Surrey, East and West Sussex was given the Lord Erskine Award for his 'outstanding contribution to animal welfare'.

Chris, a former police officer, served with Lancashire Constabulary for 30 years, 26 of which were with the mounted section, before joining the charity nearly 10 years ago. Since then he’s been a key figure in improving life for horses across the region.

On the honor, Chris said: “I am very flattered to be receiving this letter. It is important that World Horse Welfare Field Officers and RSPCA Inspectors work closely together when investigating concerns and I am pleased that my equine knowledge gained over many years can be of Assistance."

RSPCA Inspector Ian Robertson and Chris have worked in cooperation for several years, and often go out to visit horse-owners together. Inspector Robertson said: “The letter aims to acknowledge Chris’ contribution to horse welfare, and the close relationship we’ve fostered over the years.

“As a Field Officer at World Horse Welfare and an Inspector at the RSPCA we have the same aims: preventing cruelty and promoting kindness, and we work together to achieve that.

“Over the years he’s become part of the team, helping with newly appointed and trainee inspectors, who learn a lot from him, and we want to show our appreciation for that.”

Whilst with Lancashire Constabulary Chris was promoted to chief instructor responsible for the training of police horses and officers. He was a national mounted assessor, which involved assessing police officers nationally at all levels of equine development. He holds the British Horse Society Stage IV certificate in equine knowledge and riding ability.

“His knowledge of horses really is second to none," said RSPCA Inspector Robertson, “something he’s always happy to share with me, my colleagues and horse owners whenever the need arises.”

Chris will be presented with the letter of commendation by RSPCA Chief Inspector Martin Marsh on Monday 23 June 2008 at RSPCA Southport, Birkdale and District Branch Animal Shelter.
