AQHA, Others Seek To Overturn Decision Closing Illinios Slaughter Plant

Because of their dedication to the welfare of all breeds of horses, AQHA and a group of other horse organizations filed an amicus curiae, or friend of the court brief, with the U.S. Supreme Court. In the brief filed April 16, the group is asking the United States’ highest court to overturn a federal appeals court decision upholding an Illinois law that closed a horse processing plant in Illinois.

The groups believe that some 60,000 horses have already been denied humane euthanasia because of the plant closing. While the organizations do not endorse slaughter or processing of horses, they do recognize the necessity of slaughter as a humane option for owners who do not have the means to properly care for horses that, for whatever reason, have become unwanted.

There is NO reason good enough to send any horse to slaughter! You take on a responsiblity when you buy a horse! Take care of it until the end. Give up something in your life, such as beer, cigarettes, etc, to take care of the horse, and give it a humane end! It is too easy to send a horse to slaughter when "you don't want it any longer no matter what the excuse!" Responsibility has gone out the window! We throw babies away, dogs and cats and now horses! These are all living, breathing creatures of God! Take it seriously, and take care of the horse you bought! All the different breeds should set aside money from dues and donate to rescue farms! There is alot one can do such as take in horses bond for slaughter! Don't make excuses and make the horse suffer at a slaughter plant!

I would like to know the percentage of the Quarter Horse breed goes to slaughter. Also the percentage of the other breeds. This will tell us who the irrisponsible breeders are. The glut of horses are because of the breeding programs, looking for that one winner. It is all money too, as one person told me the horse prices at auctions have fallen because the horses are not going to killers. My reply is now people who want a horse can now purchase one, and it is not about papers and breeding, it is for the love of the horse. they go to loving homes. If you can't sell it at a sale then euthanize it.

Don’t tell me there is never a good reason to euthanize/slaughter (terminology, the end result is the same) even Barbaro was spared any more suffering. Slaughter doesn’t mean you love your horse less, it means you love him enough. Associations need stricter guidelines for their breeders and promote responsible breeding ethics.

Please everyone do not loose sight that horses are animlas, (labeled livestock). If someone should choose to eat horse meat that is thier choice. I would rather someone sold a horse for slaughter and we had stick slaughter guide lines, than see them abandoned. I have one of those horses. I choose not to send my horses to slaughter, but you never know when that maybe your only option. At our local Animal Control, you can pick up horses regurlarly that have been abandoned, our tax money is paying for that. I wish that all these people could put all this energy into Human suffering.
