Unwanted horse issue - your thoughts

Do you feel there is a growing amount of unwanted horses in the United States? Why? How do you think this problem can be or should be solved?

If the question is about whether the closing of slaughter houses has resulted in unwanted horses then I see no evidence of that.

If the question is that there are unwanted horses and it has nothing to do with the slaughter house closures then I suggest that emphasis should be on an education campaign to change how we view horses. One organization, "Unwanted Horses," is promoting that view.

Not so much 'unwanted' as 'unable to care for' would be my analysis...

People keep breeding for more, but don't sell or make use of the last foal and the problem continues to grow. As all of us can testify, it takes some real coin to care for a horse properly. I also believe a horse needs a purpose, and fewer and fewer are really used like they should be. A horse with a job enjoys its life. A horse in a stall 24/7 gets odd habits and vices because of boredom and lack of use.

I could go on forever, but it would be redundant. Horse owners just need to learn to be truly responsible.

The best way to do away with unwanted horses is to open a slaughter market in the US. This will do away with the unwanted horses in the U.S. It will also increase the price of horses. Most of you will think well your only concern is money. Well it takes money to have anything? Is fuel free? Is hay free? Is grain free? You tell me. This is the best way to do away with the unwanted horses. So please folks wake up and smell the roses. Its time we write our senators, representatives, governors, etc. to re-open slaughter houses in the US. Its the logical choice. Leave them shut down and we will only have more unwanted horses.

In a true free market system the overpopulation of horses will correct itself. The timing of the slaughterhouse closings was unfortunate and has really hindered this correction. I believe I can see some movement to correct the glut of unwanted horses. I see more broodmares coming through the auction sales. Fewer marginal quality animals are being kept for reproduction. This is a step in the right direction. The removal of the slaughter market could not have come at a worse time. The truth is that many of these animals are still being slaughtered in Mexico and Canada. The only difference is that the United States horse owner is not receiving the economic benefit of these sales. The money is mostly spent on shipping and commissions. Any time the rules and laws affecting the horse industry are made by people with only an emotional interest, the choices will usually be wrong!
